The Georgia Institute of Technology - Senior Vice President and Director, GTRI

The Georgia Institute of Technology is seeking a Senior Vice President & Director to lead The Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI). GTRI is the nonprofit applied research arm of Georgia Tech and one of the world’s leading university-affiliated research organizations. With 3,000+ employees, including 1,900 researchers, and nearly $1B in annual awards, GTRI delivers real-world solutions for government and industry in fields such as national security, aerospace, robotics, cybersecurity, and advanced systems.
Reporting to the Executive Vice President for Research and as a member of the President’s cabinet, this role will lead a globally respected applied research enterprise, guiding strategic direction, fostering collaboration with academic and external partners, and ensuring operational and fiscal excellence. The successful candidate will bring demonstrated experience leading complex R&D organizations, engaging with senior leaders in government and industry, and driving innovation in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic, technical, and administrative leadership for GTRI.
- Serve as a member of the President’s Cabinet, collaborating with Institute leadership to advance Georgia Tech’s mission and values: https://www.usg.edu/strategic_plan/
- Promote GTRI’s capabilities to government, industry, and commercial partners, ensuring sustained growth and impact.
- Foster interdisciplinary collaboration within Georgia Tech and across external research communities.
- Oversee research strategy, operations, talent development, fiscal management, and compliance.
- Represent GTRI as a thought leader in national and global science and technology discussions.
Qualifications
- U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain a TS/SCI security clearance.
- An advanced degree in engineering, science or other relevant areas along with executive-level experience is required, with a strong preference for a doctoral degree or equivalent experience.
- Proven success in leading a large, multi-disciplinary research organization.
- Strong track record of strategic planning, organizational leadership, and stakeholder engagement.
- Deep familiarity with national security, federal research funding, and complex systems engineering.
