Leading Through Uncertainty: A Conversation with David Cates, President & CEO of Denison Mines

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

From volatile commodity cycles to evolving regulatory environments, uncertainty is a constant in the mining sector. With over a decade as President and CEO of Denison Mines, David Cates brings deep experience navigating these dynamics.

Operating amid shifting energy demand, pricing, geopolitics, and sustainability expectations, mining leaders must balance long-term strategy with short-term volatility. Success depends less on control, and more on clarity and disciplined execution.

As part of our global Leading Through Uncertainty series, Rob Quinn, Head of the Global Mining Practice at Odgers, speaks with David Cates about how he’s navigating these pressures, as Denison Mines advances Canada’s first in situ recovery (ISR) uranium project.

Across the conversation, one theme is clear: uncertainty in mining is not episodic – it’s structural. David and Rob discuss why:

  • Innovation can unlock value where traditional approaches are not viable
  • Simplicity and clarity of purpose drive alignment and execution
  • Leaders motivated by impact create stronger alignment and accountability
  • Long-term conviction matters more than short-term precision in commodity markets

Innovation Driven by Constraint: The Phoenix Project

Faced with a high-grade, moderately-sized deposit, Denison Mines re-evaluated traditional mining methods and adopted in situ recovery (ISR) – a globally proven approach, and a first for uranium mining in Canada, that enabled the economic development of the Phoenix deposit in Saskatchewan.

This decision unlocked both economic viability and a more sustainable operating model, positioning Denison Mines at the forefront of a new approach in the sector.

Clarity Over Complexity

In a sector defined by variables outside management control, leadership clarity becomes a competitive advantage. David shares his approach of focusing on long-term value creation rather than reacting to daily market movements.

Rather than focusing on complex mission statements, this clarity is grounded in a simple objective: generating sustainable, long-term returns for shareholders. By choosing simplicity, leaders can align teams and maintain focus despite external volatility.

We can’t control the market, so we focus on long-term positioning.

Building Teams Motivated by Impact

David’s approach to building leadership teams capable of navigating uncertainty extends beyond technical capability. At Denison Mines, leaders are motivated by the opportunity to contribute to meaningful, long-term outcomes, creating stronger alignment, engagement, and accountability across the business.

Balancing Execution with Long-Term Growth

While advancing the Phoenix project, Denison continues to invest in future opportunities, recognizing that growth in mining requires long lead times and sustained exploration. This dual focus reflects a core leadership challenge: delivering today while building for decades ahead.

Leadership for Sustained Performance

Denison’s approach highlights a broader truth for the mining sector: success is less about predicting volatility, and more about building organizations that can perform through it.

Leaders who remain focused, disciplined, and clear in their direction are best positioned to navigate volatility and deliver sustained results.
