CEOx1DAY Alumni: A Conversation with Keaobaka Morare, Head of IT Strategy and Enterprise Architecture at Santam

5 min read

In this edition of our CEOx1DAY alumni spotlight series, we met with Keaobaka Morare, whose career spans banking, consulting, and digital transformation. Kea shares her reflections on leadership, the value of mentorship, and the pivotal role of continuous learning.

Q: What have been some of the most defining lessons in your career journey?

Having the right set of ‘board of directors’, as I call them, is incredibly important.

Keaobaka Morare Head of IT Strategy and Enterprise Architecture at Santam

Kea isn’t referring to a formal boardroom, but to a trusted circle of mentors, advisors, sponsors, and champions who’ve helped shape her journey. “It’s not just people in technology. My personal board includes COOs, engineers, HR executives, and PhD holders - each offering a unique perspective that has contributed to my growth.”

She reflects on the impact of having both a career sponsor and a career champion:

“I’ve been fortunate to benefit from both a career sponsor who advocated for me in key moments, putting my name forward when it matters most; and (including family and friends) who believed in me, my value, and reminded me of my potential - especially when you forget it yourself. I’ve been fortunate to have both, and their belief in me shifted the trajectory of my career in powerful ways.”

Q: You’ve mentioned your MBA was a turning point in your career. How did it shape your trajectory?

My MBA was self-funded, and without a doubt, it was the best investment I’ve ever made, both professionally and personally.

Having transitioned from traditional banking into digital roles within telecommunications and advisory, Kea recognised the need to deepen her strategic thinking and financial acumen.

I didn’t just want a qualification, I wanted to grow in how I think, lead, and show up. The MBA gave me that.

Despite the academic challenge, especially with no background in finance or economics, Kea stayed focused on the bigger picture.

“The real transformation came through peer learning: engaging with CAs, advocates, engineers, and C-suite leaders. Those shared experiences reshaped my thinking and built a network I still lean on today.”

Q: You participated in the CEOx1Day program. What impact did that have on you?

Initially matched with a different CEO, Kea’s mentorship experience was delayed by COVID, but ultimately led to a day spent with Paul Hanratty, CEO of Sanlam.

“I met the executive team, had lunch with the board, and engaged with some of the most inspiring leaders I’ve come across.”

My main takeaway from the day was the fact that I deserve to be there.

That day catalysed her move to Santam. A few months later, she was approached to join Santam as Head of IT Strategy and Enterprise Architecture.

“Today, I report directly to the Santam Group CIO and present to the same board I once met through the program. It came full circle.”

Q: What advice would you give to those considering applying for the CEOx1Day program?

“Just apply, put yourself out there, and give it your best. Own the room - but don’t be afraid. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

She also highlighted the importance of preparation: “Know the company, read recent articles, understand the industry. I prepped like I would for an interview. It shows respect and readiness, for you and the leaders you are about to meet”

Q: Are you still aspiring to become a CEO?

“Absolutely. I remain committed to the journey toward the CEO seat.”

With a growing portfolio and a recent relocation to Cape Town to be closer to the leadership hub, Kea is clearly on a trajectory toward the C-suite.

Q: Would you consider giving back to the program in future?

“Definitely. I’m committed to giving back and will always be a champion for technology. If there’s a tech-focused initiative, I’ll be the first to raise my hand.”

Final Thoughts:

Kea Morare’s story is one of intentional growth, strategic networking, and fearless ambition. Her insights highlight the transformative power of relationships and serve as a reminder to push beyond self-limiting beliefs.
