Why silence fails leaders in uncertainty – and what to do next.
Tomáš began his role with Deloitte as Head of PR and Communications in September 2025 placed by Odgers’ Klára Gajdušková. As part of our ‘Leading Through Uncertainty’ series, Tomáš shared his three core lessons that define effective leadership under uncertainty.
Watch now:
1. Be human before being right
The foundation of leadership in uncertain times is not certainty, it is trust. Leaders today are not expected to have all the answers. Instead, they are expected to be honest, emotionally intelligent and transparent. Acknowledging uncertainty, rather than masking it, helps build credibility and reassures teams that they are not being misled.
As Tomáš explains, leading through uncertainty is fundamentally about managing anxiety, both your own and your organisations. People are not looking for perfection; they want clarity, direction and authenticity.
This shift reflects a broader evolution in leadership expectations, moving away from authority and towards emotional intelligence and human connection. Leaders who recognise and respond to how people feel - not just what they need to do - create stronger engagement and trust.
2. Communicate early and often - before people start guessing
Silence is rarely neutral. In uncertain environments, it tends to amplify fear.
One of the most powerful lessons from Tomáš’ experience is simple: silence creates more fear than bad news. When information is withheld, people fill the gaps themselves, often assuming the worst.
During periods of crisis, his approach was to communicate even when messages were still evolving. This openness reduced speculation, strengthened trust and helped people feel respected rather than managed.
Effective leadership communication is therefore not about perfect messaging; it is about timeliness, consistency and clarity.
In practice, this means:
- Maintaining a regular communication cadence.
- Sharing updates even when there is no complete resolution.
- Ensuring messaging is aligned across leadership.
Boards and executive teams often underestimate how deeply uncertainty is felt across organisations. Investing in clear narratives and consistent communication is just as critical as strategy itself.
3. Protect your energy to sustain performance
Sustained uncertainty places long-term demands on leaders, not just operationally, but emotionally.
For Tomáš, nearly half his career has been shaped by crisis situations. This has reinforced the importance of protecting personal energy in order to lead effectively over time.
Leadership in these environments is not a short sprint; it is an endurance challenge. To maintain momentum, leaders must:
- Manage their own stress and resilience.
- Stay focused amid constant change.
- Avoid becoming overwhelmed by complexity.
This is closely linked to another defining capability: the ability to simplify complexity. In an environment of constant noise, strong leaders create focus.
They help teams prioritise what matters most and understand why it matters - cutting through distraction to maintain progress.
Successful leadership
Ultimately, effective leadership comes down to three interconnected behaviours: humanity, communication and sustainability. Together, these capabilities enable leaders not just to navigate uncertainty, but to create stability and confidence for those around them.
