An Interview With Frank Dobbelsteijn, Head of Global Operations, Swissport | Introduced by Odgers

Susan Thompson, Head of Odgers’ Aviation Practice, caught up with Frank to explore how his extensive experience in various roles and locations has shaped his leadership style, as well as his top three tips for leadership success. 

How will your leadership influence your company and its wider stakeholders? 

I’ve worked my way up from ground level, starting my aviation career with a small side job in Amsterdam while I was still studying. 

Over the years, I’ve taken on a wide range of roles across the world. I believe that my extensive international experience brings a unique skillset to the Swissport team—whether it’s understanding global labour markets or navigating tough and challenging situations like airport strikes and unionisation issues. 

These experiences have shaped how I approach day-to-day decision-making, helping me better grasp the complexities we face. After all, we operate in nearly 300 airports worldwide, and even stations within the same country can differ significantly - a station in Scotland isn’t the same as one in England, and that’s just within the UK. 

What are your top three tips for success in leadership? 

For me, being a good a leader isn't always about being right. I don't always get it right, but it is about making sure you are open minded so your teams can speak up. I believe this is the best approach that works for me. 

Surround yourself with critical people and matter experts. 

Be aware of and understand cultural differences. Aim to have the mindset of coming to an agreement with an individual of how things can be done, make sure they own and understand what the goal is, and then enable them to independently deliver.
