Introduced by Odgers | Success Story
Odgers partnered with the American University Kyiv (AUK) in Ukraine in their search for a visionary Rector and Professor, with Jacek Leśkow assuming the role in March 2024.
Established in 2022, AUK is a world-class private university providing global education developed to American standards.
What attracted you to the role at the American University?
In central and Eastern European culture, educated people are highly respected in society, and so this was something I felt my role of Rector and Professor would develop further.
The second attraction to the role is my joy of learning. My data science statistics classes are very technical and require a lot of mathematics and computer analysis, and what I love is finding the hook to make the material attractive – getting to the heart of ‘why’ and how useful the solution would be in application. This is a very important part of being a Professor.
What are your future goals and ambitions for the American University?
When the war in Ukraine ends, our institution is in the position to compete with many private universities across the whole region, due in part because our courses are English language-based.
We are already in the fortunate and strong position to offer a dual degree opportunity with the very well-known and highly-regarded Arizona State University.
We also attract a significant amount of interest from local investors as well as the international business community who are seeking new opportunities.
As we are located in the centre of Kyiv, like other historical European cities, space is in very short supply.
My personal dream, since I'm from an engineering background as a data scientist, is to build a school of engineering and a new campus in the suburbs as part of our expansion plan.
How was your journey with Odgers?
My journey with Odgers was very satisfying. Your institution makes a huge difference for all leaders looking for advice in a turbulent world.
