Jason Barrett was appointed Chief Executive Officer of The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in November 2023. 'Introduced by Odgers' features exceptional individuals appointed to prestigious leadership positions globally, demonstrating our strong client partnerships across various industries and sectors.

Peter Henry, Managing Partner in Scotland, joined Jason to explore some of his strategic approaches and his view on successful leadership.

How will your leadership influence the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and its wider stakeholders?

As an engaged leader, one of my favourite quotes is “leadership is a contact sport” meaning you have to be there and roll your sleeves up.

The size of the organisation and the fact it is in transition means presence has all the more significance.

In activating our company’s strategy effectively, and having dealt with strategy in the military and various other businesses, I find the challenge often lies not in identifying the "what" or the "why", which are indeed crucial, but in the "how".

Successful execution is crucial—it involves defining the steps needed to achieve objectives, identifying the necessary team members, allocating resources and finances, and determining the sequence of actions. Effective leadership entails addressing these components to ensure commercial viability and appropriately prioritising tasks.

Watch Jason outline his advice for leadership success:

What are your top three tips for success in leadership?

  1. Communication. Simply put, what I know, who else needs to know it and how I am going to tell them, is paramount.
  2. Close any gaps in understanding. If there is a misunderstanding, miscommunication, confusion or a lack of clarity, it is imperative for leaders to close that gap as quickly as possible.
  3. Beware of your wake. I think this is one of the more profound mantras in leadership; what you say and do, how you behave, and your mood, creates a wave behind you. I believe the importance of consistency increases with seniority, as it can really provide freedom to teams.
