The Next in Line 2026 leaders will be revealed on 1 October 2026 at The Executive Leadership Agenda 2026, hosted by PwC in Hellerup.

Future leaders are already here. Do we recognise them?

Many organisations invest significant resources in talent and leadership development. Yet one question remains critical for any organisation with long-term ambitions:
How do you identify the leaders who are ready for the next step before a C-level title appears on their business card?

In a world shaped by geopolitical uncertainty, technological advancement and evolving expectations of leadership, experience and proven results remain important. Yet they rarely tell the whole story. Future leaders must also be able to navigate complexity, inspire followership and turn ambition into meaningful change.

These are precisely the qualities at the heart of Next in Line, a joint initiative by:

Odgers Danmark x PwC Danmark

The initiative aims to identify, shine a spotlight on, and celebrate the next generation of Danish business leaders and decision-makers. At the same time, it offers a unique insight into the capabilities and personal qualities that are likely to shape the executive teams and boards of the future.
But what is it that truly distinguishes the leaders who stand on the threshold of executive leadership?

More than experience and results

When assessing leadership potential, it is natural to look at experience, responsibility and a proven track record of results. Yet potential often reveals itself in qualities that cannot be captured on a CV alone.

It is about the ability to set direction, build trust and inspire followership. It is about bringing people together around a common purpose and delivering results through others. It is about curiosity, integrity and the courage to make decisions in situations where the answers are not always clear.

The organisations that succeed in building strong leadership pipelines are often those that recognise these qualities early. Not only in the most visible individuals, but also in the leaders who, through their actions, create lasting results, strong relationships and positive change for the people and organisations around them.

What qualities have stood out most among this year’s candidates? And what gives you optimism about the future of leadership in Danish business?

Future leaders inspire optimism

A recurring theme throughout Next in Line is a genuine sense of optimism about the future of leadership.
Across industries, the jury encounters leaders with strong ambitions, deep professional expertise and a clear desire to create value. Perhaps even more importantly, they meet leaders who are genuinely committed to people, organisational culture and the long-term development of their organisations.

Many of the candidates demonstrate a maturity in their approach to leadership that extends beyond traditional notions of success. Their focus is not solely on growth and performance, but also on responsibility, developing others, collaboration and the ability to create purpose within an organisation.

This reflects a broader shift across Danish business, where future leaders are expected to combine ambition and performance with authenticity, curiosity and a genuine focus on people.

The profiles that stand out most are those who can inspire followership in times of uncertainty, transformation and accelerating change. They combine clear strategic direction with the ability to engage people, build trust and sustain momentum, even as circumstances evolve.

What can orginastions learn from Next in Line?

Beyond highlighting future leaders, Next in Line provides a unique perspective on the qualities, behaviours and capabilities that define leadership potential. For organisations, the initiative serves as a reminder that identifying tomorrow’s leaders requires looking beyond performance alone and recognising the individuals who have the capacity to lead through complexity, inspire followership and create lasting impact.
For many organisations, the challenge is not attracting talent. It is identifying and developing the talent that already exists within the organisation.
The most successful organisations take a systematic approach to talent identification, succession and leadership development. They look beyond those delivering results today and focus equally on those with the potential to lead the organisation through the challenges of tomorrow.
This requires attention to capability, motivation, learning agility and leadership maturity. It also requires a willingness to recognise potential before it becomes obvious to everyone else.
Next in Line contributes to this conversation by shining a spotlight on leaders approaching their next significant career step and by creating a platform where leadership potential can be recognised, explored and celebrated.

Investing in future leadership

Future leaders are already among us.

They are leading teams, driving transformation and delivering results within organisations. Some are highly visible. Others operate more quietly behind the scenes. What they share is the potential to become the next generation of leaders who will shape Danish business in the years ahead.

That is precisely why initiatives such as Next in Line matter.

Not because they predict the future, but because they help identify the people with the potential to shape it.

By becoming better at identifying, developing and showcasing tomorrow’s leaders, we do more than strengthen individual careers. We strengthen organisations’ ability to succeed in an increasingly complex and rapidly changing world.

The future leaders are already here.

The question is whether we are recognising them early enough.
