European COO Joins US Law Firm.

  • Odgers was instructed by a US law firm with a thriving London office to find their first ever European COO.
  • Following successful growth in London, the firm had set their sights on expanding into Europe and this individual would be key to achieving that continued, strategic growth.
  • The successful candidate had run a large global practice group at a global firm and had been responsible for the London office in its entirety during COVID-19, equipping them well to deal with the challenges of managing the client’s UK HQ.
  • Having increased headcount significantly in their London office, the firm required a Europe-based COO to ensure the organisation’s UK HQ had the right infrastructure to sustain and support the lawyers on the ground as well as achieving their ambition of opening additional offices in mainland Europe.

The brief was to find an individual used to working at pace, turning their hand to anything from HR and risk to the practicalities of running an office location.

Our Approach

The scope of a role like this is incredibly varied. Identifying an individual with the right mix of skills and experience to be able to match the requirements was challenging. Our strong track record in senior business services placements and senior leaders in the space meant we were able to immediately recommend several candidates who we thought would be well placed for this role.

We had regular dialogue with the client team comprised of senior leaders based both in London and the US. When presenting candidates from UK or European firms with no presence in the US, part of our role was to contextualise that particular firm in terms of size, scale and client base to get the US-based COO and CPO comfortable that we were presenting candidates with experience of working in comparable size and calibre of organisation.

The search was iterative, and we applied feedback from the client at each stage to refine the exact requirements and profile of the ideal individual for the role.
